Well a broken mattress is not comfortable. Maybe you should consider a fouton. They are fairly inexpensive and can really give your room much needed space.
I just moved to a home with a much smaller closet. I successfully made mine work. I hung all my dresses in one section, dress pants follows, long sleeve nice top after, then nice short sleeve tops after, then jeans. I placed shoes and purses on the closet floor. I also put belts on a hanger too. In my dresser I have one drawer filled with socks and undies. I have drawer for pajamas, one for t-shirts, a drawer or two for older shirts and jeans that I have no room for in my closet. Right now I have my summer clothes folded in a large tote that I paid for and then I will switch them out in the summer. I have too many clothes and this seems to be working well for me. My husband put a closet organizer in his closet because it is smaller than mine.
